We found an amusing website with humour about US politics:

It attacks Democrats as well as Republicans, although the figure that attracts the most blows, logically, is President Bush. In addition to being the sitting President, he also makes an easy target for comedians.

From Spain the programme could be freely viewed by satellite (Astra, Hotbird…) on CNBC.
Even though Conan O’Brien has joked about Bush, the situation he refers to is not a joking matter. Since the attacks on September 11th, 2001, individual rights have been curtailed in the US. An example is the FBI seizing information regarding certain persons’ reading habits. Librarians have opposed this incursion into confidential records and in some cases are destroying information about book loans in order to protect the individual’s reading rights.

Hay palos tanto para los demócratas como para los republicanos, pero lógicamente a quien pegan más fuerte es al presidente Bush, pues además de estar ejerciendo ahora, es un blanco fácil para los humoristas.

Aunque el comentario de Conan O’Brien está expuesto en términos humorísticos, el tema que toca no es nada divertido. Desde los ataques del 11 de septiembre de 2001 se han reducido los derechos individuales en los Estados Unidos. Un ejemplo es la apropiación por parte del FBI de datos sobre las lecturas realizadas por determinadas personas. Los bibliotecarios se han opuesto a esta incursión en registros considerados confidenciales y en algunos casos han decidido destruir la información sobre los préstamos para proteger los derechos de lectura de sus usuarios. NOTAS SOBRE EL INGLÉS
Las palabras “administración” y “gobierno” se aplican de forma algo diferente en inglés y castellano:
Bush administration = Gobierno de Bush
government worker, civil servant = funcionario de la administración pública
comedian = humorista (el término castellano “comediante” se traduce por “actor”/”actress”)
comedy = obra de humor (teatro, cine)
funny = divertido, gracioso. Normalmente se refiere a situaciones, chistes, o personas que provocan risa:
The Marx brothers movies were very funny
Otro significado de “funny”, sin embargo, es “raro” o “extraño”:
this soup tastes funny = esta sopa tiene un sabor raro.
amusing = divertido, gracioso, entretenido (sin necesariamente provocar la risa):
‘Aquí no hay quien viva‘ is an amusing TV series and some situations are very funny.
humorous = humorístico, gracioso.
A humorous book in one language does not always translate well to another. But certain types of humour are universal.
