Dear all,
Last week we ended by saying that the holidays were “drawing nigh” = getting “close” or “near”. “Nigh” comes from Old English and sometimes appears in traditional songs, such as the Christmas songs [or “carols”] that we hear so often these days. The following site offers both lyrics and music of the most common carols.
Today we are offering 3 jokes taken from the following site. One of them –the Bush joke- is very popular on the internet and, in fact, can also be found on many other web sites.
Fire Destroys Bush Library
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A tragic fire on Monday destroyed the personal library of President George W. Bush. Both of his books have been lost. The White House spokesman said the president was devastated, as he had not finished coloring the second one.
Did you hear about the schoolgirl who was so excited about a book she found in the library called “How to Hug”? It turned out to be volume eight of an encyclopedia.
Why did the sparrow fly into the library? It was looking for bookworms.

El fuego destruye la biblioteca de Bush
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - El lunes, un trágico incendio destruyó la biblioteca personal del presidente George W. Bush. Sus dos libros se han perdido. El portavoz de la Casa Blanca dijo que el presidente estaba desolado, ya que no habÃa terminado de colorear el segundo.
¿HabÃas oÃdo sobre aquella colegiala que estaba muy entusiasmada con un libro que encontró en la biblioteca llamado, en inglés, “How to Hug” [”Cómo abrazar”]. Resultó ser el volumen ocho de una enciclopedia [Si no resulta obvio, pensad en cómo el lomo de la enciclopedia indica su contenido por orden alfabético. Claro está que este chiste no funciona en castellano.]
¿Por qué el gorrión voló dentro de la biblioteca?

Comments about the English text:
- jokes: If we want to “contar un chiste” in person, we would say “tell a joke” (never “say a joke”!). We only “explain” a joke if the person listening has not understood the punch line [for the meaning of “punch line”, see http://www.qandj.info/index.php?s=punch ]
- storytelling = contar cuentos o relatos. Ojo: History (pron. hÃstory) = Historia
- on the internet, on the web. Recordad: siempre se usa “on”
- devastated = devastado, desolado (como se ve, en inglés “devastated”, en sentido figurado, puede aplicarse a personas).
- excited = emocionado, entusiasmado, alborotado, ilusionado, excitado. Ojo: este verbo se usa mucho más en inglés, y la gran mayorÃa de las veces no se puede traducir por “excitado”.
- to look for = search for = buscar
- bookworm = rata de biblioteca (lector devora-libros o estudioso que pasa muchas horas en las bibliotecas).
