Today we are going to look at some fairly useful phrases:

Woman: - I can’t get this computer to work.
Man: - This computer is junk!
Dewey (speaking to the woman): - Don’t blame yourself. Let’s reboot and see if that solves the problem.
Man: - That’s what I was saying. It’s the computer’s fault!
Dewey: - You, on the other hand, could use a little more introspection.

Traducción:

Os recordamos que agradeceremos vuestras sugerencias de nuevo material –siempre que entren dentro del ámbito profesional de IweTel y las podamos comentar en estos mensajes de los viernes. Hoy vamos a revisar unas frases bastante útiles.

Mujer: - No puedo hacer funcionar este PC.
Hombre: -¡Este PC es basura!
Dewey (dirigiéndose a la mujer): - No se culpe. Reiniciemos y veamos si eso resuelve el problema.
Hombre: - Esto era lo que estaba diciendo. ¡Es culpa del PC!
Dewey: - Usted, por otro lado, podría observarse un poco más a sí mismo.

Sobre el inglés:

to get […] to work = hacer funcionar […]

Como ya sabréis, seguramente, en inglés to get se usa muchísimo. Cualquier diccionario de inglés tiene que dedicar una página entera a sus diferentes usos. He aquí unos pocos ejemplos comunes para practicar:

• to get the PC repaired = hacerse arreglar el PC
• internet gets me = internet me apasiona, me absorbe; OJO: también puede significar una molestia: it really gets [to] me when ads pop up on the internet = Me molesta mucho cuando aparecen los anuncios pop-up en internet.
• I never seem to get around to putting my desk in order = Nunca tengo tiempo de ordenarme el escritorio
• The student assistant got to the library late yesterday = Ayer el becario llegó tarde a la biblioteca.
• Dewey gets along with most users = Dewey se lleva bien con la mayoría de los usuarios.

junk = basura, porquería, desperdicios; junk mail = correo basura, spam

reboot = reiniciar. Algunos usan el anglicismo “rebotar”. El verbo “to boot” o “to bootstrap” se usa para arrancar un ordenador o empezar un proceso complejo comenzando con otro más sencillo. Viene de la expresión “to pull oneself up by one’s bootstraps” = autoayudarse, empezando con pocos recursos: “Andrew Carnegie, a millionaire industrialist and philanthropist, gave money to create many U.S. public libraries at the beginning of the 20th century. He arrived in the US as a poor, young Scottish immigrant who pulled himself up by his bootstraps.” Por cierto, “bootstrap” significa literamente el cordón de la bota.

on the other hand = por otro lado (¡no se puede decir “on the other side”!)

introspection = introspección
