Hi,
A classical library rule is: “What happens in the library stays in the library” (a rule that the FBI wanted to break after 9-11, as a security measure).
What the readers don’t know is that Dewey likes to gossip!
User (worried): - Are you sure this was confidential?
Dewey: - Absolutely. Your inquiry will never leave this library.
(Dewey runs off)
Dewey: - Wait until you hear this!
Tamara (indifferent): - If it’s like the last one I’m not sure I want to know.
Translation:
Una máxima bibliotecaria clásica dice: “Lo que ocurre en la biblioteca se queda en la biblioteca” (regla deontológica que el FBI quiso infringir con las medidas de seguridad implementadas después del 11-S).
¡Lo que los lectores no saben es que a Dewey le gusta mucho cotillear!

Vocabulario:
absolutely = sí, absolutamente.
gossip = cotilleo, fisgoneo
understatement = atenuación, eufemismo
he likes to gossip = he likes to gossip a lot.
By saying “he likes to gossip”, what is actually meant in English is “he likes to gossip a lot”. For example, when referring to somebody who is a borderline alcoholic, the English people might say “he likes to drink”. This is a good example of a tendency in English, understatement, which is part of the foundation of English culture and humour (to say the least).
le gusta cotillear = le gusta mucho cotillear.
Cuando se dice “le gusta cotillear”, en inglés se sobreentiende en realidad “le gusta mucho cotillear”. Por ejemplo, si estuvieran hablando de alguien que casi es alcohólico, los ingleses dirían “a este chico le gusta beber”. Este es un buen ejemplo de una tendencia en inglés británico a suavizar las expresiones y a utilizar eufemismos, cosa que forma parte de los fundamentos de la cultura y del sentido del humor ingleses (por no decir más).
