The Librarian’s

Friday, April 27th, 2007

Dear Q&J readers,

I’m forwarding you a message I received last month through the Web4lib (Web for libraries) mailing list, regarding an Australian Broadcasting Corporation TV series about librarians. Strangely enough, it seems that ABC are not going to broadcast it via satellite, so we won’t be able to receive it in Spain. It’s a pity, as a series about librarians, assuming they haven’t been stereotyped, could be an excellent tool for the promotion of our profession as a whole.

Subject: [Web4lib] OTT: The Australian TV series “The Librarians”

Dear Everyone,

ABC in Australia is the equivalent of the BBC in the UK and has some parallels with PBS in the USA.

Get ready for The Librarian’s series on ABC in 2007. The ABC has released more information about the storyline of the upcoming ‘The Librarian’s’ comedy-drama series. Read about it here:

http://abc.net.au/corp/pubs/media/s1860093.htm

These actors would be unknown to most of you, but a few of the names are very well recognised in Australian comedy. Fingers crossed that this will be a good show!

Cheers

Vocabulary:

strangely enough = es raro

through the Web4lib mailing list = through Web4lib’s mailing list - las dos formas son correctas.

series [síeris] = serie. Even though this word seems to be in plural form, it is the same in singular and plural form: one series of books, two series of books.

Another example of this is the word people. Most commonly used as the plural form of person, it can also be used as a singular noun, meaning a nation or race (this meaning also has a plural form, peoples).

Es decir, el significado común de people = gente es un plural. Por ejemplo: people are happy; people are sorry; people aren’t working

[como algunos recordaréis no es la primera vez que en Q&J intentamos corregir este fallo tan común y tan difícil de quitarnos de encima los españoles]

Repitamos una vez más: people are:-)

a people = a nation or race = pueblo o nación
release [rilís] = divulgación, publicación; soltar, liberar, lanzar…; press release = nota de prensa
broadcasting = radiodifusión
stereotyped [stí’riataip’t]
would be unknown [ud bi annóun] = probablemente serán desconocidos

¿Pedimos a las cadenas de TV españolas que compren la serie?
