Hola, colegas:
¿Cómo será nuestro futuro legado digital? ¿Cuántas pérdidas/mordiscos sufrirá que ya no podremos recuperar nunca más?
Hoy veremos unas líneas de una novela reciente sobre una rata de biblioteca (literalmente).
Se trata de “Firmin: Adventures of a Metropolitan Lowlife” de Sam Savage,
publicado por Coffee House Press, 2006, ISBN: 978 1566 89181 3.
Publicado en castellano como “Firmin. Aventuras de una alimaña urbana”
por Seix Barral, 2007, ISBN: 978 8432 22824 7.

At first I just ate, happily gnawing and chewing, guided by the dictates of taste. But soon I began to read here and there around the edges of my meals. And as time passed I read more and chewed less until finally I was spending almost all my waking hours reading, and chewed only on the margins.
And oh, how I then regretted those dreadful holes! In some cases, where there were no other copies, I have had to wait years to fill the gaps.
I am not proud of this.
TRADUCCIÓN:
Al principio sólo comía, felizmente royendo y mascando, guiado por los dictados del gusto. Pero pronto empecé a leer por aquí y por allá alrededor de los bordes de mis comidas. Y con el paso del tiempo más leía y menos masticaba hasta que finalmente me pasaba casi todas mis horas de vigilia leyendo, y masticando sólo en los márgenes.
Y oh, ¡cómo lamenté entonces aquellos horribles agujeros! En algunos casos, cuando no existían otros ejemplares, he tenido que esperar años para llenar las lagunas.
No me siento precisamente satisfecho de eso (literalmente = no estoy orgulloso de eso).
VOCABULARIO:
gnaw = [suena como “nó”] roer
chew = [suena como “chú”] masticar, mascar; chewing gum [chúing gam] = goma de mascar, chicle
here and there = aquí y allá
spend (time) = pasar (el tiempo) / gastar (el dinero)
waking hours [uéiking áuers] = horas en que uno está despierto, vigilia; on waking = al despertar
dreadful [drédful] = horrible, espantoso, atroz
gap = laguna (en un texto) / espacio vacío, hueco / intervalo (en el tiempo); recordemos la famosa frase de los altavoces del metro de Londres: Mind the gap! = ¡Cuidado con la separación! (entre vagón y andén)
