Hi, folks!
The librarians are discussing about the service priorities in front of a “SAFETY FIRST” sign that Mel —the library manager- has stuck on the wall:

Mel: -Safety is our new priority
Dewey: -I thought serving our patrons was our priority.
Mel: -It is.
Dewey: -Then isn’t it “SAFETY SECOND”?
Tamara (children’s librarian): I believe that children are our future!
What about books? Aren’t they a priority?
Finally, Mel has put a patch on the sign, that now reads “SAFETY pretty important.”

Los bibliotecarios discuten sus prioridades de servicio frente a un cartel donde pone “LA SEGURIDAD LO PRIMERO”, que Mel, la directora de la biblioteca, ha pegado/colgado en la pared.
Mel: -La seguridad es nuestra nueva prioridad
Dewey: -Yo pensaba que nuestra prioridad era servir a nuestros usuarios.
Mel: -Así es.
Dewey: -Entonces ¿no sería “LA SEGURIDAD LO SEGUNDO”?
Tamara (bibliotecaria infantil): ¡Creo que los niños son nuestro futuro!
Colleen: -¿Qué pasa con los libros? ¿Es que no son una prioridad?
Finalmente Mel ha puesto un parche en el cartel, donde ahora puede leerse “LA SEGURIDAD ES BASTANTE IMPORTANTE”.
VOCABULARY
safety = seguridad laboral, del edificio, protección de la salud y de la integridad física, medidas contra incendios, contra la contaminación…
security = seguridad policial, seguridad frente ataques, robos, sabotajes…
Dicho lo anterior, quizá sorprenda un poco que seguridad social se traduzca por social security, pero aquí se usa security por estar más relacionado con las securities (obligaciones) de las finanzas, protección del futuro personal y social.
pretty = bonita (chica, casa…) / considerablemente, bastante
pretty good = bastante bueno
pretty well, thank you! = bastante bien, ¡gracias!
a pretty mess we’re in! = ¡nos hemos metido en un buen lío!
it’s pretty much the same = más o menos es lo mismo
he got pretty cross = se enfadó bastante

Dewey: – I’m not authorized to do that.
Reade: – What are you authorized to do?
Dewey: – I could waive your fines.
Reader: – I don’t have any fines.
Dewey: – Then I can offer you toilet paper. Or toner.

A veces no llegamos a distinguir claramente hasta qué punto Dewey bromea o habla en serio…
Lector: – ¡La máquina se comió mi dinero! ¡Quiero un reembolso!
Dewey: – No estoy autorizado a hacerlo.
Reade: – ¿Qué está autorizado a hacer?
Dewey: – Podría perdonar sus multas.
Lector: – No tengo ninguna multa.
Dewey: – Entonces le puedo ofrecer papel higiénico. O tóner.
VOCABULARIO
refund [rifán], reimbursement [riimbásment]= reembolsar
to send something cash on delivery (COD) = enviar algo contra reembolso
waive [uéif] = renunciar a, perdonar
authorized [ozoráisd] = autorizado
I don’t have any fines = No tengo ninguna multa (fijémonos que en inglés se pone en plural)
I don’t have fines = No tengo multas (nunca).

Today there are few readers in the library, and Dewey is tidying his nails. Mel, the manager, approaches him to make him do something.

Dewey: -You mean “lack of behavior.”
Mel: -Go out in the stacks! Seek out a patron!
Dewey: -I’ve sought. No one needs help.
Mel: -Then do something in back!
Dewey: -And abandon my post?

Hoy hay pocos lectores en la biblioteca, y Dewey está en el mostrador limpiándose las uñas. Mel, la directora, se le acerca para que haga algo.
Mel: -Este comportamiento es inaceptable.
Dewey: -Te referirás a la “falta de comportamiento”.
Mel: ¡Ve a las estanterías! ¡Busca un usuario!
Dewey: -Lo he buscado. Nadie necesita ayuda.
Mel: ¡Entonces haz algo por allá dentro!
Dewey: -¿Y abandonar mi puesto?
VOCABULARIO
to make him do something (fijémonos: sin “to”)
behavior (behaviour en UK) [bijéivia] = comportamiento
stack = montón, estantería
seek, sought, sought [sot] = buscar
in back = generic reference to a work area, back room = atrás, dentro, habitación de trabajo, zona que no está de cara al público.
Sobre arreglarse las uñas:
Dewey está tidying his nails o filing his nails.
En cambio una mujer estaría más bien fixing her nails or doing her nails.
file [fáil] = fichero / lima
Cuidado: Si dijéramos “Dewey is arranging his nails”, un inglés entendería que Dewey tiene una colección o conjunto de uñas y las ordena de alguna manera
