Estimados amigos:
Hace tiempo que en estos mensajes de los viernes incluimos algo parecido a “jokes” con el peculiar comportamiento de Dewey y sus colegas de la BP de Mallville, así que hoy ya va tocando una “quote”.

VOCABULARIO
to poke = tocar, empujar, hurgar
Algunos hemos aprendido esta palabra recientemente al verla en Facebook: to poke somebody = dar un toque (con un dedo) a alguien
Veamos diferentes usos:
to poke along = andar perezosamente
to poke the fire = hurgar la lumbre, atizar el fuego
to poke fun at = burlarse, mofarse de alguno
to poke a hole in (something) = hacer un agujero en (algo)
to poke the nose everywhere = meter la nariz en todo
to poke one’s nose into other people’s business = meter las narices en asuntos ajenos
to poke at (something) (with one’s finger/a stick) = dar un golpe a (algo) (con el dedo / con la punta de un palo)
she gave him a poke with her umbrella = le dio un golpe con la punta del paraguas
to stick [pret: stuck, pp: stuck] = pegar, clavar, atascar
to jiggle = sacudir, mover rápidamente (to jiggle is a smaller movement than to shake)
to jingle = hacer sonar campanitas (bells) u objetos metálicos (como llaves, keys)

to -ing = A alguno le extrañará esta construcción “to + gerundio”. Se trata de una construcción muy frecuente que vendría a ser un acortamiento de una frase más larga: resigned to the fact of playing the martyr

Hoy os proponemos repasar las preposiciones que pueden acompañar al verbo to take:
take after – resemble = salir parecido a
the boy takes after his grandmother = el chico se parece a su abuela
take along = llevar (algo o alguien)
take at (his or her) word = tomarle la palabra, aceptarle una oferta
take by surprise = tomar por sorpresa
take down = bajar algo / derrotar
take for = tomar por
what do you take me for? an idiot? = ¿Por quién me tomas? ¿Por un idiota?
take in = entrar, ingerir, empequeñecer ropa, apretarse (el cinturón)
take into (consideration, account, etc.) = considerar, tener en cuenta
take it = tomar algo / aguantar
take off = quitar (por ejemplo, la ropa) / despegar (avión)
take on (a challenge) = afrontar (un reto) / take on a partner, a characteristic, an employee, a client, a business, etc. = tomar, aceptar
take over = take-over = tomar el relevo, tomar el control
take up = sacar algo pegado (por ej. del suelo) / take up time = tomar o gastar tiempo / take up a topic (for discussion) / take up a hobby = empezar un hobby
take your time = tómatelo con calma
take (something) to = haz que (algo) sea

Fijémonos que se usa un gerundio para expresar un futuro
-What are you getting for Christmas? = que obtendrás (que te van a regalar) para Navidad?
– I asked for a pony, but I think I’m getting a bicycle = Pedí un poney pero creo que tendré una bicicleta
I have got = tengo (presente) / he obtenido (pret. perfecto)
I am getting = recibiré, me darán, obtendré (futuro) / estoy recibiendo (presente)
to find = encontrar
to find out = descubrir, saber, informarse
