Dewey: -The mismatched colors or the spill on the carpet?
(Mel has not yet noticed the stained carpet.)
Mel: -The carpet?!
(Dewey thinks that Mel is telling him to clean the carpet.)
Dewey: -I agree. I like the patchwork effect.
Dewey: -Wait, did I tell you about the kid who drank our paint?

VOCABULARIO
mess = revoltijo, enredo, berenjenal, lío, confusión
to have to* = tener que
to have got to = tener que (got se usa mucho en inglés británico, en cambio en inglés americano añade un sentido “rebelde”).
Ejemplos:
She’s got to work at weekends (UK) = She’s to work weekends (US) = Tiene que trabajar los fines de semana.
(en este ejemplo she’s = she has)
Y también nos fijamos que en US no ponen la preposición “at”
Have I got to do it right now? (UK/US) = ¿Tengo que hacerlo ahora mismo?
En UK esta expresión es normal pero en US sería como de protesta, poco educada, dicha con enfado.
También se podría decir:
Do I have to do it right now? = ¿Tengo que hacerlo ahora mismo?
I haven’t got to take my sister to school, my parents do it (UK) = I don’t have to take my sister to school (US) = No tengo que llevar mi hermana a la escuela, lo hacen mis padres
La primera frase, que en UK sería normal, en USA parecería de una persona ofendida por no haber tenido el privilegio de llevar a la niña:
I haven’t got [the chance] to take my sister to school
* have to se usa en casos de una obligación que se nos impone: el jefe, los padres, un reglamento…
I have to be home by ten (My parents told me so.)
I have to get up early, because I start work at 8 (It is a rule.)
I must be home by ten. I have a very difficult day tomorrow (It is my own decision.)
don’t have to significa que no hay ninguna obligación, no es necesario hacerlo.
I don’t have to get up early at weekend (I can stay in bed as long as I want.)
You don’t have to go with me (You can go with me if you want to.)
You shouldn’t smoke (It is bad for your health.)
You mustn’t tell lies (It is very bad to tell lies.)

Dewey: -I prefer artistic flourishes.
Maintenance man: -Why aren’t you painting the entire wall?
Dewey: -This is all the paint I was given.
Maintenance man: -It looks like a fever dream.
Dewey: -These decisions are made over my head.

El bibliotecario Dewey sigue con el mono de trabajo puesto pintando la pared, tal como le encargó Mel, la directora de la biblioteca. Se le acerca un operario y le hace unas consideraciones:
Operario: -Debería continuar con la misma textura.
Dewey: -Prefiero las florituras artísticas.
Operario: -¿Por qué no pinta toda la pared?
Dewey: -Ésta es toda la pintura que me han dado.
Operario: -Parece un sueño febril.
Dewey: -Estas decisiones se toman por encima de mí.
VOCABULARIO
overall / overalls = mono de trabajo, sobretodo
to suppose = suponer
(to be) supposed to = suponérsele (a alguien) una obligación
You are supposed to obey the law = Tienes que obedecer la ley
We are supposed to work late = Tenemos que trabajar hasta tarde (nos han obligado)
I’m supposed to mow the grass today, so I hope it rains = Hoy tengo que cortar el césped (hoy toca), así que espero que llueva.
grain = grano / textura, veteado (aquí grain es un falso amigo, pues no se refiere a la pintura granulada)

Mel: -We the staff facing crippling budget cuts.
Merv: -Didn’t you go to graduate school?
Dewey (resigned): -Oui.

VOCABULARIO
We the people. Comienzo del preámbulo de la Constitución de los Estados Unidos: “We the people of the United States, in order to…”
the royal “we” = Nos, plural mayestático.
take on = confront = asumir, tomar, aceptar, realizar, emprender
to cripple [críp(a)l] = lesionar dejando a la persona (por ej.) coja
crippled [críp(a)ld] = lisiado, cojo, inválido. Normalmente, hablando de personas, se diría handicapped, disabled o person with a disability.
crippling [críp(a)ling, crípling] = paralizante
Sobre lo de ir a la universidad:
class = sesión de un curso o bien un curso
Ejemplo:
I’m teaching a class in English literature = Doy una clase de literatura inglesa (todo el curso) = Voy a dar una clase de literatura inglesa (sólo una clase)
“course” no se usa para referirse a los estudiantes. En su lugar en inglés se dice, por ej., the students in my class / cohort / graduation year
disciplines, subjects = asignaturas (mathematics, geography…)
curriculum = plan de estudios / carrera / material de estudios
Ejemplo:
Once again, our school is trying a new math curriculum for 3rd graders; no matter how we approach the subject, most of them hate it = Una vez más nuestra escuela va a probar un nuevo plan de estudios de mates para los del 3r grado; sea cual sea el enfoque del tema, la mayoría de ellos lo detestan.
major = especialidad
Ejemplo: -You’re in university now? What’s your major? -I’m a math major, with a minor in physics. Math is my major.

The Mallville Public Library has run out of paper and toner for the printer available to the public. A user is angry about the situation, but Dewey counterattacks by showing his detailed knowledge of the personal things she has printed out –and then left behind– that have nothing to do with library reading materials.

Over the printer there are two signs: “Bring your own paper” and “Bring your own toner.”
User (angry): -I can’t believe this!
Dewey: -You’ll have to go without your cat photos.
User (surprised) = -How did you know –?
Dewey: -You often leave your printouts behind.
Dewey: -Speaking of which, I think you should have stayed with Jeff.
User: -This is getting creepy.
Dewey: -Also you should get that mole on your lower back checked.

En la Biblioteca Pública de Mallville se quedaron sin papel y sin toner para la impresora puesta a disposición del público. Una usuaria está enfadada con esta situación, pero Dewey la deja en evidencia, pues la lectora usaba la impresora para asuntos particulares que no tenían nada que ver con los fondos de lectura de la biblioteca. Dewey demuestra saber un montón de cosas sobre ella a través de las copias que la usuaria se dejaba olvidadas en la impresora.
Sobre la impresora se ven dos carteles: “Tráigase su papel” y “Tráigase su tóner”.
Usuaria (enfadada): ¡No me lo puedo creer!
Dewey: -Va a tener que pasar sin las fotos de su gato.
Usuaria (sorprendida): -¿Cómo lo sabe…?
Dewey: -A menudo se olvida usted las copias.
Dewey: -Hablando de eso, creo que debería haberse quedado con Jeff.
Usuaria: -Esto se está poniendo espeluznante.
Dewey: -También debería hacerse mirar ese lunar que tiene en la parte baja de la espalda.
