A freak question receives a theatrical response from Dewey, our hero librarian, but it seems library management does not approve.

User: – Could I kill someone with this plastic fork?
Dewey: – I beg your pardon?
User: – It’s for a bet. My friends agreed to abide by the opinion of a librarian.
Dewey:- [holding the user by his neck and acting with the fork; user is smiling and it looks like he is having a good time] … And then after I snap the handle I just stab your brain through the eye!
[Mel the manager appears in the image with an stern face]

Una pregunta insólita recibe una respuesta teatral por parte de Dewey, nuestro héroe bibliotecario, pero parece que la dirección de la biblioteca no la aprueba.
Usuario:- ¿[Le parece que] Podría matar a alguien con este tenedor de plástico?
Dewey:- ¿Perdón?
Usuario:- Es por una apuesta. Mis amigos han acordado atenerse a la opinión de un bibliotecario.
Dewey:- [cogiendo al usuario por el cuello y actuando con el tenedor, el usuario sonríe y parece que se divierte]
…Y luego, después de romper el mango simplemente le pincho el cerebro a través del ojo!

I beg your pardon? [ai bég yo(r) pá(r)dan] = frase muy común con el sentido de ¿Perdón? ¿Qué ha dicho? ¿Puede repetirlo? (literalmente “le pido su perdón”, o “le ruego que me disculpe”)

to agree [agrí] (with somebody) (about something) = estar de acuerdo (con alguien) (en algo)
to abide by (somebody) [abáyd bay] = atenerse a, acatar, respetar
to have a good time = divertirse, pasárselo bien (literalmente “tener un buen rato”)

Dewey: -You don’t look excited. You look like death.
Dewey: -Let me guess: you have to do something that goes against common sense, better judgement, and everything you stand for.
Mel: -We’re getting a new employee.
Tamara: -What? Colleen just left!
Dewey: -Yup, that’s a new low.

La bibliotecaria Colleen se jubiló, y en la Mallville Public Library contratan a un auxiliar de biblioteca, porque con la crisis económica no pueden pagar a un bibliotecario.

clerk [cléek] = empleado, oficinista
paraprofessional = trabajador auxiliar sin calificación profesional (US), no es lo mismo que un trabajador en prácticas ni un becario.
doublespeak = doble lenguaje, lenguaje con expresiones pensadas para esconder el verdadero significado.

Mel: -I don’t know. I don’t know! If there’s one thing I’ve learned during this budget crisis, it’s that I’m powerless and out of the loop!

Tamara (peeking through the door): —When does the new library assistant start?
