Dewey: – You authorized it.
Mel: – I want to “get” it.
Dewey: – You’ll get the credit.
Mel: – I want to be in the loop.
Dewey: – If I stop and explain, someone else will do it first. Then I won’t be able to cite you as my inspiration in all those journal articles.

Dewey: – Si me paro y te lo explico, algún otro lo hará primero. Entonces no podré citarte como mi inspiración en todos esos artículos de revista.
VOCABULARIO
to dodge [dádch] = esquivar, eludir, torear, esconderse
still = aún, todavía
to get the credit = recibir el mérito, reconocimiento, honor, prestigio.
credits = reconocimientos de autoría, créditos
to be in the loop = estar al corriente, informado, estar en el grupo de los que saben.
loop [lúp] = curva, lazo, bucle
I won’t = I will not (y olvidemos para siempre el I shall not que nos hicieron aprender en el siglo pasado, que ya no se usa en la conversación normal, a menos que hablemos con la reina Isabel).
I’m able to… = soy capaz de…, consigo, puedo
I can = puedo
I could = podía, pude, podría.
I will be able to…= seré capaz de, conseguiré, podré.
I would be able to…= sería capaz de, podría conseguir [hacerlo].
Os preguntaréis qué diferencia hay entre “be able” y “can”. Prácticamente ninguna. Quizá can sea más taxativo, más fuerte. Y luego lo importante es que con can se hace el presente y con could [cud] el pasado, pero este verbo no se puede conjugar en futuro.
Aprovechamos para insistir en un error bastante frecuente: los infinitivos después de “can” no llevan “to”. No se puede decir: I can to read this book, I can’t to design this web site.
Hay que decir: I can read this book, I can’t design this web site.
Por último, recordemos el slogan de la campaña de Barack Obama, a quien felicitamos desde aquí: “Yes, we can“.
