Hace tiempo que en estos mensajes de los viernes incluimos algo parecido a “jokes” con el peculiar comportamiento de Dewey y sus colegas de la BP de Mallville, así que hoy ya va tocando una “quote”.

It is sometimes argued that if copyright law is standing in the way of a universal archive then maybe the world’s collective memories should be placed into some kind of escrow account, not to be opened until copyrights have been sorted out or expired. This sounds plausible, but it would act against the worthy principles espoused by the British Library and others that as much as is humanly possible should not just be available but available now.

After a hiatus caused by trips in early December and then the holidays, we are now back with the first Q&J of 2007. But first, we would like to take this opportunity to send you our best wishes for the new year.
Today’s quote is a technical one. Among other words, we would like to highlight “overhaul”, which we have seen on the front page of the last 3 issues of Information World Review. We’ve chosen this article also because the language used by the press frequently presents a challenge for English language students because of its condensed expressions and rich vocabulary often chosen specifically for impact.
In the IWR October 2006 issue we read this title: “BL demands overhaul of intellectual property law. Microsoft and Google join a tide of support for BL led pressure for IP manifesto” By Mark Chillingworth, Information World Review, 06 Oct 2006
Microsoft and Google have joined forces with the British Library in calling on the government to radically overhaul the intellectual property (IP) law. Meetings at both the Labour and Conservative Party conferences have added momentum to the debate and a manifesto for new legislation has been drafted.
The National Consumer Council , British Phonographic Industry and the Open Rights Group are also lobbying both the current government and the resurgent Conservative Party to modernise the law to reflect the digital age. ‘The current stand-off on intellectual property threatens innovation, research and our digital heritage,’ said British Library chief executive Lynne Brindley.
Some information professionals may be surprised to see Google campaigning for change given its approach to book digitisation so far, but Brindley was quick to defend the search engine giant. ‘They have an interesting view,’ she said. ‘They argue that the way they do things, with the
snippets of book content, is a legitimate interpretation of the law as it stands.’In its manifesto the British Library argues that the current copyright law seeks ‘to strike an appropriate balance between the rights of creator and the public interest in ensuring access. Without reward there is nothing to be gained in innovation and without access there is no
inspiration for the future.’

La prensa, con expresiones abreviadas y su rico y chocante vocabulario, es frecuentemente un problema para los estudiantes de inglés.

En su manifiesto la British Library dice que la ley de copyright actual intenta “lograr un equilibrio razonable entre los derechos del creador y el interés público en tener asegurado el acceso. Sin recompensa no hay nada a ganar con la innovación y sin acceso no hay inspiración para el
futuro.

to overhaul = rehacer, revisar, reacondicionar
to argue = argumentar, discutir [arguiú]
to call on = apelar, pedir ayuda; también, visitar.
to demand = exigir, reclamar
to draft = esbozar, hacer un borrador, redactar
to lobby = ejercer presión política. NB: Este uso viene del significado de la palabra “lobby” = vestíbulo o pasillo, ya que originalmente los que querían influir sobre proyectos de ley esperaban a los legisladores en el pasillo de la Cámara.
to strike a balance = poner en equilibrio. NB: El verbo “strike” tiene muchos significados, algunos de ellos aparentemente contradictorios. Por ejemplo, los usos más frecuentes suelen representar una acción violenta o negativa: golpear, pegar, asestar, herir, chocar, clavar, hundir. Pero la
expresión “to strike a balance”, igual que otra, “to strike an agreement” (llegar a un acuerdo), sugieren acciones positivas, lo que indudablemente confunde al lector no angloparlante. Por cierto, para indicar la ruptura de un acuerdo podemos decir “to strike down an agreement”.
to take the opportunity = aprovechar. Conviene recordar esta expresión (o bien, “to take advantage of”) y no decir “profit”, pues “to profit” significa sacar provecho económico!
