Dewey continues with his obsession (and big effort!) to recover books with construction paper of different colours according to the library sections/topics. Mel, who is a professional librarian, baulks at the idea and is quite sceptical about its usefulness.
Nevertheless it seems that the new system is well received by the readers:
Mel: – Why do all these books look the same?
Dewey: – I recovered them with construction paper.
Mel: – How can anyone tell them apart?
Dewey: – I wrote the book’s title, author, and call number on the cover.
Mel: – People will hate this!
Patron: – I was told the orange books were here?
Dewey: – Help yourself.
Translation:
Dewey continúa con su obsesión (¡y trabajazo!) de forrar los libros con cartulina de colores de acuerdo con las secciones/materias de la biblioteca. A Mel, que es realmente una bibliotecaria profesional, no le gusta mucho y se muestra bastante escéptica sobre su utilidad. Sin embargo, parece que el nuevo sistema es bien recibido por los lectores:

Mel: – ¿Por qué todos esos libros se ven iguales?
Dewey: – Los forré con cartulina.
Mel: – ¿Cómo podrán distinguirse?
Dewey: – Escribí su título, autor y signatura en la cubierta.
Mel: – ¡A la gente no le gustará esto! (“la gente odiará esto”)
Lector: – ¿Me dijeron que los libros naranja estaban aquí?
Dewey: – Sírvase usted misma.
Vocabulario:
call number = reference number = signatura
help yourself = sírvete tú mismo, apáñate tú mismo con franqueza (¡frase muy usual!)
to baulk (US also balk) at = hesitate to accept [pron. bok]
to tell apart = to distinguish = to discern = distinguir
