Dear colleagues,

Today we’ll focus our attention on the expression “TO BE DONE (WITH)” and the word “ELSE”, both of which appear in today’s cartoon strip. Now, if you will kindly go to the following address:

Old man: -I’m not done watching these movies!
Dewey: -Sorry, someone else has them reserved.
Old man: -So I have to return them?
Dewey: -You could just pay late fees. Keep them a month and it would still be cheaper than Blockbuster.
Mel: -You told him what?
Dewey: -I’m a librarian. I can’t withhold information (en la tira falta una h).

Traducción:

Señor mayor: -¡No he terminado de ver estas películas!
Dewey: -Lo siento, alguien las ha reservado.
Señor: -¿Así tengo que devolverlas?
Dewey: -Podría pagar tarifa por retraso. Puede tenerlas un mes y todavía sería más barato que en Blockbuster.

TO BE DONE (WITH) = terminar, acabar.

Examples:
–She’s not done cataloguing the books yet = Ella todavía no ha terminado de catalogar los libros;
–We’re finally done with the annual report = Por fin hemos acabado el informe anual.
La palabra “with” es obligatoria con un sustantivo.

Idiomatic expression using “DONE WITH”:
–It’s over and done with! = “¡Se acabó!” [una discusión; una relación sentimental, etc.]

SOMEONE ELSE = (literalmente: alguien otro, cualquiera…). ELSE es una palabra elegante que nos cuesta usar. Practiquémosla un poco: anything
else? = ¿algo más?;
what else? = ¿qué más?;
who else? = ¿quién más?;
where else? = ¿en qué otro sitio?
how else? = ¿de qué otra manera?
nobody else = nadie más.

Examples (without translation):
–Is there anything else you would like to know about MARC21?;
–What else would you like me to include in the annual report?;
–Who else can help her catalogue books today?
–Where else could people go if our library closes in August?
–How else can we raise money to keep the library open in August?;
–Nobody else knows that the library will be closed in August.

Idiomatic expressions with “ELSE”:
–If all else fails, the library will have to close in August = En el peor de los casos, se tendrá que cerrar la biblioteca en agosto;

OR ELSE = si no
Ex.: Stop writing on the walls or else … = Dejad de escribir en la pared si no…

LATE FEES = The fine [multa] charged by libraries for borrowed items that are returned past the deadline.

BLOCKBUSTER (que significa “bomba con la potencia suficiente para reventar una manzana”) es el nombre de una popular cadena de videoclubs.

WITHHOLD = ocultar, retener. It is unethical to withhold vital information from the users; The government withholds part of my monthly salary for social security.
