“Just kidding” is a very common expression; it means “only joking”. In this story, Dewey explains how he finds it funnier to tell a joke without saying “just kidding”, because sometimes people can’t tell he’s joking.
Dewey: - Observe. Jokes are funnier when you don’t say “just kidding”.
Dewey: - Don’t like that book? Just tear it in half and throw it in the trash!
User: - This feels great!
Tamara: - But that wasn’t funny.
Dewey: - It was funny to me.
Traducción:
“Just kidding” es una expresión muy corriente que quiere decir “sólo bromeaba”. En esta historieta Dewey cuenta que es más divertido gastar una broma sin especificar que está bromeando, porque a veces la gente no sabe si es verdad o no (can’t tell = se queda sin saber qué decir, sin saber qué pensar).
Dewey: - Observa. Las bromas son más graciosas cuando no dices “sólo bromeaba”.
Dewey: - ¿No le gusta este libro? ¡Pues rómpalo en dos y tírelo a la papelera!
Usuario: - ¡Esto sienta de maravilla!
Tamara: - Pero esto no ha sido divertido.
Dewey: - Yo lo encontré divertido (fue gracioso para mí).
Vocabulario:
to kid = to joke = bromear
Además de la expresión “just kidding” también se utiliza “no kidding”, “I’m not kidding you” = no bromeo, para decir “de verdad”; “you must be kidding” = debes estar bromeando.
Ej. “It’s cold, no kidding!” = ¡Hace frío, no es broma!
to kid = to fool = engañar. “They are kidding themselves if they believe it’s going to be easy“.
to tell a joke, to make a joke = contar un chiste, gastar una broma.
this service is a joke! = este servicio no funciona, es un chiste!
Recordemos un verbo irregular, que ya vimos en una historieta anterior:
to tear (tear, tore, torn) = desgarrar; rasgar; romper (papel, tela); a tear = un desgarrón
Y también añadiremos un par de expresiones:
