Dear colleagues,
If a few weeks ago we wrote about “knock-knock” jokes, today we are bringing you some “light bulb” jokes, a type of joke based on the simple action of changing a burned out (or “fused”) bulb. We occasionally have seen this kind of joke in Spanish, but our impression is that they are more of a tradition in English-speaking countries. Where “knock-knock” jokes usually involve a play of words, “light bulb” jokes generally poke fun at specific groups of people. The standard “light bulb” format is, “How many [group members] does it take to change a light bulb?” A classic answer to this question was, “5 - one to hold the bulb and 4 to turn the ladder” [”uno para aguantar la bombilla y cuatro para girar la escalera”]. Now, replace “group members” with the name of the biggest rival of your favourite football team or the people from your husband’s or wife’s home town!
In the examples provided below, taken from IFLA’s web site, the groups represent types of library workers and the jokes make gentle fun of certain personal/professional traits associated with these groups.
Lightbulb jokes
- How many academic librarians does it take to change a light bulb?
- Just five. One changes the light bulb while the other four form a committee and write a letter of protest to the Dean, because after all, changing light bulbs IS NOT professional work!- How many catalogers does it take to screw in a light bulb?
- Just one, but they have to wait to see how LC does it first.- How many reference librarians does it take to change a light bulb?
- (with a perky smile) “Well, I don’t know right off-hand, but I know where we can look it up!”- How many library system managers does it take to change a lightbulb?
- All of them as the manual was lost in the last move (or flood).- How many library managers does it take to change a lightbulb?
- At least one committee and a light bulb strategy focus meeting and plan.- How many library technicians does it take to change a lightbulb?
- Seven. One to follow approved procedure, and six to review the procedure (8 if you count the librarian they all report to)
Chistes de bombillas
- ¿Cuántos bibliotecarios académicos se necesitan para cambiar una bombilla?
- Sólo cinco. Uno cambia la bombilla mientras los otros cuatro forman un comité y escriben una carta de protesta al Director, porque después de todo, cambiar bombillas ¡NO ES (su) trabajo profesional!- ¿Cuántos catalogadores se necesitan para enroscar una bombilla?
- Sólo uno, pero tienen que esperar y ver primero cómo lo hacen en la Library of Congress.- ¿Cuántos bibliotecarios referencistas se necesitan para cambiar una bombilla?
- (con una alegre sonrisa) “Bien, ahora mismo no lo sé, pero sé dónde podemos buscarlo!”- ¿Cuántos gestores del sistema bibliotecario se necesitan para cambiar una bombilla?
- Todos ellos ya que el manual se perdió en el último traslado (o inundación).- ¿Cuántos directivos de biblioteca se necesitan para cambiar una bombilla?
- Al menos un comité y un plan estratégico con reuniones especializadas sobre las bombillas.- ¿Cuántos técnicos de biblioteca se necesitan para cambiar una bombilla?
- Siete. Uno para seguir el procedimiento aprobado, y seis para revisar el procedimiento (8 si se cuenta a su jefe bibliotecario).
Sobre el inglés:
We call to your attention to the fact that light bulb appears both as a single word and as two words and both forms are commonly used .
Also, we can see that “catalogers” is written in American English (without the “u”).
Aparte de fijarnos en que “catalogers” está escrito en inglés americano (sin la u), hoy vamos a detenernos en las 2 últimas frases:
Como habréis visto, la penúltima traducción (= second from the bottom; next to the last) la hemos hecho de forma bastante libre.
“Focus group”, “focus meeting” o “focus strategy” son nombres de métodos usados para resolver problemas mediante grupos dinámicos de discusión.
En la última frase, “report to”, que literalmente serÃa “informan a”, tiene el significado más amplio de “dependen de” pero implicando una cierta autonomÃa de acción. P. ej.: “The administrative assistant works under the head librarian who reports to the Dean” = “El auxiliar administrativo depende del jefe de la biblioteca quien a su vez depende del Dean” (”dean” es un cargo equivalente a decano, aunque en algunas universidades también se llama asà al director de biblioteca).
Note that “depende de” in this case is not translated as “depends on”, which is best translated as “cuenta con”:
“The school depends on the public library for providing supplementary reading material for their students” = “La escuela cuenta con la biblioteca pública para obtener material de lectura suplementario para sus alumnos”.
However, in some cases “depende de” can be translated as “depends on”: “Will the librarian change the light bulb? I don’t know, it depends on how many people will help him” = “¿El bibliotecario cambiará la bombilla? No lo sé, depende de cuántas personas le ayuden”.
Please note the two expressions that mean “burlarse” = “make fun of” or “poke fun at”
