Dear English-speaking information professionals,
These days wifi continues to be a popular topic. On Tuesday, 13 December 2005, Julio Pesquero posted a message to IweTel about the installation of wifi by the city government of A Coruña. In a change from our customary translation of text from English to Spanish, today we are offering Julio’s message in English:
In A Coruña, the city government has installed a Wireless Municipal Service that is currently being used by 2 city libraries with wireless connections; however the number will continue to increase. It is a service that has been very well received by our users. The majority of them are totally self-reliant, but the libraries have prepared a guide for configurations (proxy, browsers) for those that need it. In addition, the libraries are lending external wireless cards on a temporary basis to library users whose portable computers lack them. In fact, the issue that we’re now dealing with has more to do with the connections to electrical outlets, since the batteries on portable computers do not normally last longer than an hour and a half, and we need to find a solution for our users’ needs.
And so it is not by chance that we offer you an illustration of this same problem in the public library of the imaginary city of Mallville:

Mel tells Dewey an often-repeated belief that really is no longer true, at least at the present time:

En A Coruña el ayuntamiento ha implantado el Servicio Municipal Wireless del que disfrutan en la actualidad dos bibliotecas municipales que disponen de conexión inalámbrica, aunque su número se irá incrementando progresivamente. Es un servicio de gran aceptación entre nuestros usuarios. La mayoría de ellos son completamente autónomos pero nuestras bibliotecas han editado una guía para la configuración de ordenadores (proxy, navegadores) en los casos que fuese necesario. Por otro lado las bibliotecas prestan temporalmente tarjetas externas wireless a aquellos socios de las bibliotecas cuyos ordenadores portatiles no dispongan de ella. En realidad la cuestión que se nos está planteando ahora mismo tiene que ver más con las conexiones a la red eléctrica, ya que las baterías de los portátiles no suelen durar más de hora y media, y debemos encontrar una solución a la demanda de nuestros usuarios.

Mel comenta a Dewey una creencia común que realmente no es tan cierta, al menos por ahora:

English hints:
En la nota de hoy la palabra más desconocida para la mayoría posiblemente sea “tethered” (pron: tédzad) del verbo “to tether” (pron.: tédza) = atar. La misma forma es un sustantivo: tether = atadura, traba, cuerda. El significado original de esta palabra era atar un animal, dejándole un poco de margen de movimiento –por ejemplo, un caballo en un terreno abierto-. También se puede utilizar de forma figurativa refiriéndose a un alcance limitado por unas restricciones. “To be at the end of one’s tether” significa estar al extremo límite de las posibilidades de uno, etc. “Mel is at the end of her tether over budget discussion with the city government”.
