In a previous strip we saw Dewey very busy looking for information for a patron –who supposedly had left- on how to babyproof a home. As Dewey became a father recently, Mel, the manager of the Mallville Public Library suspects that the supposed patron doesn’t exist. He avoids telling the truth by answering her with one of his typical ambiguous sentences.

Mel: -Did that patron ever come back?
Dewey: -Not yet.
Mel: -Admit that you looked up that babyproofing information for yourself.
Dewey: -No.
Mel: -You’d never work that hard for anyone else.
Dewey: -I’d do anything to confound your expectations.
TRANSLATION
En una tira anterior vimos como Dewey estaba muy atareado buscando información para un usuario –que supuestamente se habría ausentado- sobre cómo poner una casa a prueba de niños. Como Dewey fue padre hace poco, Mel la gerente de la Mallville Public Library sospecha que el supuesto usuario no existe, y pregunta a Dewey. Éste rehuye decir la verdad y contesta con una de sus frases ambiguas.
Mel: -¿Ha vuelto ese usuario?
Dewey: -Todavía no.
Mel: -Admite que buscaste esa información sobre cómo poner la casa a prueba de bebés para ti mismo.
Dewey: -No.
Mel: -Tú jamás trabajarías tanto para nadie más.
Dewey: -Haría cualquier cosa para confundir tus expectativas.

Opcionalmente se puede añadir that:
I never would have (would’ve) thought that [that / this / it] could happen, aunque en el caso de that that queda feo repetir y no se acostumbra a usar, sólo queda un that.
that hard = tanto, tan duro
