Today we present a certain type of “Murphy’s laws” applied to libraries. These appear on the IFLA web site’s humour section.
To be honest, many of them are rather simplistic and a bit worn, requiring some effort to bring a smile to one’s lips. Therefore what we have done is to select those that at least have interesting vocabulary to learn:
a) 6 books on a topic + 5 classes = odds are 2-to-1 on teachers assigning the same topic at the same time.
b) When 60% of your book order is back-ordered, you can safely bet that 90% of the back-orders are out of print.
c) Books will remain upright on the shelf until you go to place another book beside them.
d) You can be sure the student who has the most overdue books reads the least.
e) If it’s a good book, it’s out of stock. If it’s an excellent book, it’s out of print.
f) The volunteer aide who files the worst is the one who volunteers the most.
g) No matter how long you keep an article or piece of information you will never need it till you throw it away.

Hoy os presentamos una especie de leyes de Murphy aplicadas a las bibliotecas, según aparecen en el web de la IFLA, sección de humor:
Para ser sinceros, la mayorÃa de ellas nos parecen bastante infantiles y gastadas, y quizá alguno necesite hacer algún esfuerzo para sonreir con ellas 
Por lo tanto lo que hemos hecho es seleccionar las que al menos tienen un vocabulario interesante para aprender:
a) 6 libros sobre un tema y 5 clases = las probabilidades son 2 a 1 que los profesores asignen el mismo tema al mismo tiempo.
b) Cuando el 60% de tu pedido de libros lo ponen en “pendientes”, puedes apostar con seguridad que el 90% de ellos están agotados.
c) Los libros permanecen de pie en la estanterÃa hasta que pones otro libro a su lado.
d) Puedes estar seguro que el estudiante que tiene más libros fuera de plazo es el que menos lee.
e) Si es un buen libro, no está disponible en las librerÃas. Si es un libro excelente, está agotado.
f) El voluntario que archiva peor es el que se ofrece más para ayudar.
g) Por mucho tiempo que guardes un artÃculo o información nunca lo necesitarás hasta que la hayas tirado.

odds are … on = las probabilidades son, lo más probable es que
back-order = un pedido de libros que el proveedor no puede satisfacer porque algunos no están disponibles. El pedido queda abierto durante un plazo predeterminado, a la espera de la disponibilidad de todos los tÃtulos.
bet = apostar
out of print = agotado
upright = de pie, vertical (cosas); standing up = de pie (personas)
out of stock = no disponible temporalmente en el almacén del proveedor.
volunteer aide = persona que ayuda voluntariamente
piece of information = información. IMPORTANTE: En inglés no se puede decir “an information” sino “information” o “a piece of information”. Igualmente, no se puede decir “a news”, sino “news” o “a piece of news” = noticia.
throw away = tirar (a la basura); [Ver: Q&J 21/4/06]. La palabra “throw” se refiere al acto de lanzar (tirar, arrojar): lanzar la pelota; tirar una piedra (throw the ball; throw a stone).
When putting on your sun protector cream at the beach, be careful with the book you are reading: it doesn’t need any.
