We have taken this Friday’s quote from the web site of Fiona Bradley, an active librarian from Sydney. It is only the initial paragraph of an article:
“One of the greatest bugbears in librarianship continues to be stereotype and the image of librarians. Long perceived as old women who wear buns in their hair, glasses, and a twin-set, this image has become stereotype thanks to the image of librarians in film, novels, and journalism. The American Library Association has decided that this impression needs to change, especially since a large percentage of librarians will retire in the next ten years and there will be many vacancies to fill”.

La cita de este viernes la hemos extraído de la web de Fiona Bradley, una activa bibliotecaria de Sydney. Se trata sólo del párrafo inicial de un artículo:
“Una de las mayores pesadillas de la biblioteconomía continúa siendo el estereotipo y la imagen de los bibliotecarios. Percibidos desde hace tiempo como mujeres mayores que llevan moño, lentes, y un conjunto de 2 jerseis, esta imagen se ha vuelto un estereotipo gracias a la imagen de los bibliotecarios en películas, novelas, y periodismo. La American Library Association ha decidido que esta impresión tiene que cambiar, especialmente aprovechando que un gran porcentaje de bibliotecarios se jubilará en los próximos diez años y habrá muchas vacantes para cubrir”.

¡Fijaos en esta traducción tan simple!: desde hace tiempo = long
retire = jubilarse, retirarse
remove, withdraw, take away = retirar
The librarian retired at age 60 and began to withdraw from all professional activities = La bibliotecaria se jubiló a los 60 años y comenzó a retirarse de todas las actividades profesionales.
They removed all the old newspapers from the shelves = Retiraron todos los diarios antiguos de los estantes.
They took away the patron’s library card = Le retiraron al usuario el carnet de la biblioteca.
La letra de una canción se puede traducir como lyrics o words, nunca como “letters”.
ES CURIOSO… ES CURIOSO… ES CURIOSO… ES CURIOSO…
Hoy trabajaremos la expresión tan común “¡es curioso!”, que generalmente nos resulta difícil traducir al inglés con el sentido exacto tal como la aplicamos en español. No podemos decir “it’s curious”. Antes hemos traducido “curiosa lista” por “interesting list”, pero no es exactamente lo mismo.
Formas de traducir “¡es curioso!” al inglés (a escoger según el matiz):
= that’s odd, that’s unusual, that’s interesting!, that’s surprising!, o también sonidos como: oh!, wow!
aunque también podemos decir:
= how curious!, how odd!, how strange!, etc.
“Persona curiosa” puede traducirse (según el significado) como:
-An odd person (persona rara)
-A person who is curious by nature; a person with great curiosity (con curiosidad para aprender o investigar)
-A nosy person (fisgón, persona que mete las narices en lo que no le debería importar); A busybody (indiscreto)
Otras frases correctas en inglés:
I’m curious to see São Paulo = Tengo interés en ver São Paulo
I’m curious about how the library plans to preserve its digital resources in the future = Tengo curiosidad sobre cómo piensa la biblioteca preservar sus recursos digitales en el futuro
curiously enough = aunque parece mentira, aunque parezca extraño
And an old refrain: “Curiosity killed the cat!” Es decir, no hay que indagar en cuestiones ajenas.
