Dear Q&J readers,
After the short Easter holidays, I guess that most of you are already thinking about your summer holidays. Well, some more English language tips will probably come in handy wherever you go.
Today we’ll focus on these three words: “tip”, “plot” and “trailer”.

Tamara, the librarian in the children’s section, is trying to convince a young reader to read a book, following one of the Mallville Public Library tips:
Library tip # 26: Just read it.
Teenager: - Tell me about this book.
Tamara: - It’s wonderful!
Teenager: - Can you be more specific?
Tamara: - Not without ruining the plot.
Tamara: - I don’t want to be like those trailers that tell you everything about a movie.
Teenager: - There’s a movie? Great! I’ll take that instead!

Máxima de la biblioteca nº 26: Léelo sin más.

Teenager: - ¿Puedes concretar más?
Tamara: - No, si no es contándote (estropeándote) el argumento.
Tamara: - No quiero ser como esos trailers que te cuentan toda la película.
Teenager: - ¿Hay una película? ¡¡¡Bien!!! ¡La cogeré en vez (del libro)!
Vocabulario:
to come in handy = to be useful = venir bien
tip = hint = aviso, advertencia, consejo, indicación, sugerencia
tip [que ya estudiamos en nuestra nota anterior] tiene también otros significados:
2) punta (I had it on the tip of my tongue), cabeza (from tip to toe = de pies a cabeza, toe = dedo del pie)

Lo más frecuente en inglés es poner No. o #
El signo # se llama también sharp [por parecerse al sostenido musical, que sube o agudiza (sharpen) medio tono la frecuencia de la nota musical a la cual precede.
Por último # también es muy conocido por el nombre hash (una palabra que significa además “lío”).

Hoy, lo mismo que hace dos semanas, nos aparece el verbo to tell = contar
Aprovecho para recordar a mis paisanos catalanes que deben “contar” historias, contar chistes, etc., y sólo los deben “explicar” si el oyente no los ha entendido.
plot = 1) argumento, trama; 2) complot, conspiración; 3) cuadro, parcela
A partir del tercer significado ha derivado plotter = impresora trazadora de dibujos a partir de un PC, por desplazamiento horizontal y vertical de una plumilla sobre el papel. Ver un modelo aquí:
